Anybody keeping animals is responsible for their species-appropriate rearing
Until a few decades ago most humans were just happy if they got enough to eat. We ask ourselves whether or not we may eat animals only when we are no longer confronted with existential worries. In my opinion, of course we may use animals! Humans are part of nature, and there are no such questions in nature. But when we keep animals, we take responsibility for them. I feel obliged to guarantee that my farm animals’ living conditions are as species-appropriate as possible.
What about plants? Plants react to environmental influences the same way we do: They grow when it rains, wither when it is too dry, form unusual symbiotic relationships or propagate if their habitat allows. These interactions provide the basis for the natural food chain. The challenge consits in treating nature in all ist interdependencies with respect and in avoiding overexploitation. More…
